I have not been as excited to review a cookbook, as I was to review The Whole Family Cookbook. Little Man loves, loves, loves to help me in the kitchen, so to review a cookbook that understands that cooking with kids is not always such an easy task, was very exciting for me.

The Whole Family Cookbook is brought to us by What’s Cooking with Kids, a certified green cooking program and Mom-Made- business, in the San Francisco Bay Area. I just love the Owner and Author, Michelle Stern, you know how I love strong business Moms, well this one is so empowering and inspiring; she has taken what she loves and made it into a business and that amazes me. You can watch a little video of her explaining her mission and how she is doing her part to help the environment. Her mission, by the way, is to make mealtime a fun, educations experience so that kids and their caretakers can focus on what’s important: spending quality time together, eating healthy ingredients, and paying attention to the environmental impact of their food choices. She also offers cooking classes, workshops, and educational tools to motivate kids and the adults in their lives to nourish their bodies and care for their larger communities.  She is proud to support local and organic farmers whenever possible, to use her love of cooking and community to reach out to the less fortunate, consider the environment, and to do her part to improve children’s health nationwide.

The Whole Family Cookbook is an amazing how-to cookbook that not only has wonderful recipes, but also gives advice on how to grow your own vegetables, plus it has sections for “going green tips,” “Kid Zones,” (which are little games or tasks for your kids) and “Recipes for Action” (which gives tips on community service with kids.)
The day that The Whole Family Cookbook arrived I literally sat on my back porch swing and read the whole thing. It is separated into easy to navigate sections: Breakfast for Champions, Lunchtime Favorites, What’s for Dinner, Scrumptious Sides, Mom-Approved Treats, and Make Your Own! The introduction begins with a recipe for cooking with toddlers that involves 1 gallon of patience, 1 pinch of expectations, and several squirts of hand soap, ha, ha, ha,  I LOVE IT… how great and how true. Cooking with Little Man can be fun, but I will admit that it is very stressful, especially if Little Miss
gets involved. But, The Whole Family Cookbook makes it a bit easier.
Each of the fun recipes are super easy to follow since each of the steps is color-coded by age. For example:
 Chinese Chicken Salad
Sage Butter Pork Chops
with Zucchini Fries
Step 1 is to preheat the oven to 350 – this step has a red arrow which means it is for 7-10 year olds.
Step 2 is to measure soy sauce and sesame oil – this step has an orange arrow which means it is for 4-6 year-olds.
Step 3 is to stir them together – this step has a blue arrow which means that it is for 2-3 year-olds.
Step 4 is to put the chicken in the dish – this step has an orange arrow which means it is for 4-6 year-olds
Step 5and 6 both have purple arrows which means that they are for ages 11 and up
As the title of the cookbook states, it really is a whole family cookbook. I also love that there is a tidbit of information on each recipe page that tells you about the recipe or how it is good for us and/or the environment.
Since my kids LOVE snacks, the first recipe we tried was the Chewy Maple Granola Bars. It took us maybe twenty minutes to put together and it was a lot of fun, especially for my kids who got to use their hands to mix the ingredients together. Plus when they were finished both kids took a lot of pride in the fact that they made the Chewy Maple Granola Bars themselves. And, it did not hurt that they were very yummy!
Within no time at all, we found many favorite recipes including: Roasted Broccoli with Lemon, Purple Rice, Banana Sunshine Smoothie and Yummy Strawberry Yogurt Parfait.

Thanks for entering the giveaway for my new book, everyone.

The leafy greens I used were Kale – they are super healthy and taste great as chips. The knives are from a company called Curious Chefs, and are on my Amazon Store (the link it in the purple box on my side bar: http://www.whatscookingwithkids.com)

I was touched by Pamela and Shanie's comments – thank you!

Our family has been expanding our garden in preparation for a babe for a while now… we are waiting to adopt 😀 and hope to be able to feed our child when it comes home to us much of what we have grown and stored ourselves. I was talking to my husband about our garden the other day and said all were missing now are chickens and a lemon tree!

  57. I watched the video! I have so much to learn and put into practice about eating local food that is in season. I am so used to getting whatever we want from the grocery store. I think I was reminded through the video that as a parent I have the responsibility to teach my kids how to eat and love growing food… as she said, kids already know how to eat cupcakes!!
