One of the hardest lessons to teach a child is sportsmanship. I mean, at what age do they really get the concept? It seems like no matter what my three children do, whether it is racing to eat their snacks or to get to the table, someone comes in second and last and those two children are never happy. I try to explain that I am still proud of them because they tried their best, but they still don’t understand it. That is why I was very excited to review the Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Sportsmanship: Winning Isn’t Everything book, by Howard Binkow and Susan F. Cornelison.
First of all, taking a step back, I just love all the Howard B. Wigglebottom books and I am not the only one in this house who does. Each book review we have received from them has been greeted with excitement and happiness from all three of my little ones, as well as Hubby. I think that the kids like the books because they enjoy the fun stories and illustrations, while Hubby and I like them because of the lessons taught.
In Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Sportsmanship: Winning Isn’t Everything, Howard seems to be a pro at everything he does, whether skateboarding, seed-spitting, or even pie-eating, Howard was used to coming in first place. He is so obsessed with it, that he was known to cheat and when he did come in second place he threw a tantrum. Between you and me; Howard sounds just like my kids.
It is not until Howard gets kicked out of his big soccer game for bad sportsmanship and then sees a parent of another player act rudely that he begins seeing how his actions hurt others. This turning point allows Howard to come to terms with not always winning and with the realization of how much fun it is just being the best you can.
All in all, this book is a wonderful illustration of the rights and wrongs on how to treat your friends and teammates and does a wonderful job of explaining this hard concept to little ones. As always, the fun illustrations keep the children engaged and the storyline is easy-to-follow!

I’d love the Howard B. Wigglebottom’s Learns to Listen book. My 2 daughters seem to have been immune to me when I’m calling them. I have to call them several times before they answer me.
