Our animals mean the world to us. They are such a big part of our lives, we couldn’t imagine out lives without them. You see, I have always been an animal-lover and my Mama helped groom me to do everything I can to help animals in need.  She, herself, was known as the cat lady and my life was filled with fur. We were the house that the shelter called to take in last-chance cats and to foster those who needed it. Now that I am married to a man allergic to cats, I have to find different ways to help animals in need and one of my favorite ways is to read for animals… but I am getting ahead of myself…

Here are different ways we help animals in need…

One way that we have helped is by adopting our two dogs. Precious was a last-chance shelter dog and Ariel was a dog that had been fostered for more than a year. Both dogs are now a part of our family.

Another way I help animals in need is by stopping by and volunteering at shelters. I love to go in, help clean out cages and give attention to the cats that need it.

Did you know that reading for animals is another way to help? Yup… Studio Fun International, a Reader’s Digest company, has teamed up with the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), the first animal welfare organization in North America and the nation’s leading voice for animals to create a Rescue Readers book series. These adorable, sweet, and funny books are from the pet’s point of view. I received an assortment of these books to check out and the kids couldn’t be happier… Reading for animals ASPCA Kids BooksLittle Miss loves to read out loud to Precious and Ariel and takes pride in the fact that she is literally reading for animals.

The books are at just the right reading level for her and help teach her the importance of animal care, protection, and love.

I can’t tell you how much it brightens my heart to look over at the couch and see both girls snuggled up reading to themselves and each other.

In the end, they are doing their part to help by reading for animals. Oh and did I mention that for every book sold, 4–5 percent of the purchase price goes directly to the ASPCA to help continue it’s mission.  Stories are available in paperback, library binding hardcovers, and e-books. The paperback books are priced at $3.99 (each) or $15.96 (for all four) everywhere books are sold. Learn more at  To learn other ways you can help the ASPCA, go to
