Five back-to-school tips to help you bring the family back to the dinner table & a giveaway

I can’t believe that I am saying it, but it is time to start thinking about and planning for our kids to go back-to-school. I know it has been an amazing Summer of waking up when we all wanted to, eating lunch whenever the first kid complains of being hungry and having dinner anytime between five and seven, depending on how that day is going. However, school will be starting soon and it is time to buckle down and get ready so that it is not such a shock to our systems! If your family is like mine, school time means non-stop after-school activities but it doesn’t have to mean the stopping of family dinners. Here are five back-to-school tips to make the transition flawless and all of these can be started NOW!back-to-school tips

Meal Planning
One of the most important back-to-school tips is to be organized and meal planning is key.  I remember my mom used to watch cooking channels, non-stop, to make her meal plans for the week. Thankfully, today we have Pinterest, the internet, and even meal planning services to make life easier. Now is the time to begin your meal planning ideas. My advice is to set up a board in Pinterest of ideas to meal plan so that they are easily accessible. I like to alternate nightly meals between pork, chicken, ground beef, and seafood so that no one gets bored.

Purchase in Bulk or stock up during sales
Have a club membership? Now is the time to begin stocking up on dinner meal ideas so that once schools begins you will have a freezer full of main dish options to choose from. This is one of those back-to-school tips you can use now to begin stocking up for the school year.

Crock Pot meals
These are my favorite and in all honesty, I don’t do enough of them. Crockpot meals make life so much easier on school nights. Just throw your food in the crockpot and then get on with your day. Come home to fully-cooked meal, without the work.

Freezer meals
Why not set aside some time between now and the beginning of school to throw together some freezer meals. Again, I like having a Pinterest board set up with freezer meal ideas and then add them into my meal plan. This is easy to do, especially if you have been stocking up and purchasing in bulk. One of my favorite freezer meals is filling a freezer bag with diced chicken breasts or thighs, fresh herbs, onions, and olive oil… and freeze. Then one morning pull it out of the freezer to thaw, then when ready, empty the chicken into a skillet and voila… an easy meal.

Easy sides to get kids excited about veggies
Did you know that ONLY 28% of dinners include a vegetable? Ugh, that is so sad to me, but I get it. Kids are picky, veggies don’t always stay fresh, and getting to the store to get fresh veggies is not always an option. Well, life just got easier! Whether you have a picky eater, one that isn’t so keen on their veggies, or you just need quick and easy ideas, Birds Eye’s new Steamfresh sides featuring Disney character shaped pasta is now available in the freezer section of your local grocery.school tips Birds Eye

Just the other day, I brought my kids with me to the store so that they could choose their favorite side dish ideas. It was great to watch them get excited about their veggies as they chose between the following fun combinations:

Yoda shaped pasta & broccoli in white cheese sauce
R2D2 shaped pasta & green beans in marinara sauce
Spiderman shaped pasta & broccoli in yellow cheese sauce
Avengers shaped whole grain pasta & peas in butter sauceBirds Eye School Tips

What I love about the Birds Eye Steamfresh sides is that each pouch contains a wholesome combination of a hearty pasta and a veggie that the kids are sure to love. Ready in just minutes, these pouches are microwavable and easy-to-prepare. Our favorite so far has to be the Spiderman shaped pasta & broccoli in yellow cheese sauce. Little Man loves the Spiderman shaped pasta and I love that they are getting the veggies that their bodies need. Learn more at BirdsEye.com.

In the end, back-to-school doesn’t have to be stressful nor does it mean you have to say goodbye to sit-down, family meals. If you start planning now, using my back-to-school tips above, I promise, the transition from Summer will be a flawless experience. school tips family dinners
