A healthy dog is a happy dog. A healthy dog also makes a happy owner. We never want to see our furry family members feeling down, and prevention is always better than a cure. I know I always want my Precious to feel her best. That’s why I do everything I can to make sure that I’m always ahead of the curve when it comes to her health. Here are some tips to help you make sure that your dog is always a happy, healthy dog, too.
Prevention is Key for a Healthy Dog
The old saying “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is absolutely true. It’s so much better to do the things that help keep our pooches healthy than it is to try to patch them up once they get sick.
I try to do everything I can to help make sure Precious is always in the healthy dog category. I can’t imagine life without the fuzzy brat in my life. I know one day I’ll have to go on without an 80 pound lap dog crushing my legs and pawing at me to pet her. That being said, I want to make sure that I have as many days of playing fetch, wrestling matches, and numb legs as possible. That’s why I always make sure to do what it takes to ensure that “little” Precious remains a healthy dog.
Regular Vet Visits
One of the cornerstones to making sure you have a healthy dog is regular vet visits. A yearly visit is so important for younger dogs, and senior dogs need a check up twice a year. A regular vet visit is the best way to catch any sort of problems that may be brewing with your dog.
Regular Blood Work
Another important part of keeping dogs healthy is regular blood work. All dogs should have blood work done on their scheduled check up appointments. That means yearly blood work for younger dogs and twice-yearly blood work for older dogs. Blood work is key to understanding what’s going on underneath the surface of those wagging tails and lolling tongues.
A healthy dog is a dog free of parasites. Always have your dog on both heartworm and flea & tick preventative. Heartworm is a nasty infestation of actual worms in a dog’s heart. It can be deadly. Even the treatment can be deadly. Vets actually have to use poison to treat the worms. Fleas and ticks are only marginally better. Ticks carry Lyme Disease, and fleas carry worms! Blech!
A Healthy Weight
This one might strike a nerve because so many people think a tubby dog is cute, but it’s very unhealthy. A dog at his or her proper weight is a healthy dog. Being obese increases a dog’s risk for diabetes, cancer, and joint and tendon problems, so it’s important to keep your pooch svelte.
Chews are a great way to ensure you have a healthy dog in both mind and body. Chews help keep your dog’s teeth clean, as well as reduce boredom and work off a bit of energy. But don’t give them just any chew.
Stay away from anything manufactured in China. As we’ve seen from all the recent recalls over the past year, those guys will put just about anything in their products. Nothing Chinese! You’ll also want to stay away from rawhides. Rawhide is the inner hide from a cow or other animal that has undergone chemical processing to remove hair and other materials. The rawhide is then ground or used whole, and is formed into various dog chews shapes. Unfortunatly, Rawhides are indigestible and many veterinarians are concerned with the potential health risks associated with dogs consuming rawhide. These health risks include: stomach & intestinal blockage and potential ingestion of toxic chemicals used to process rawhide chews. In addition, there are serious negative environmental issues generated by the use of chemicals in processing rawhide products.
I want Precious to be a healthy dog, but I don’t want any rawhide trouble, so I give Precious SmartBones® chews. They’re The Healthy Alternative to Rawhide®. The treats are delicious and they have a rawhide-like texture that dogs love but without all the rawhide problems. AAANNNDDD product studies showed that these treats were preferred over rawhide by 9 out of 10 dogs.
SmartBones®’ outer layer is made of wholesome, flavorful vegetables, including sweet potatoes, peas and carrots. This is then combined with an irresistible inner layer of real chicken, for a scrumptious taste dogs can’t resist! That means they’re highly digestible in addition to being delicious. Yay! Their varieties include:
- Peanut Butter
- Sweet Potato
