Living green is more than just recycling, although that’s part of it. Living green is a mindset. It’s recognizing why we’re recycling as opposed to doing it just because we should. As I grow older, I look around, and I see what the thoughtless actions of we as a race are having on our planet. I live in Florida. It’s gorgeous. In fact, I know I’m biased, but I would venture to say that it’s THE most beautiful state in the country. But I see changes.
When I look out on the water, I know I’m guaranteed to see floating bottles. When I drive down the road, I know the kids and I are going to see trash. When we go to the grocery store, even the concrete parking lot is going to be desecrated with garbage. That’s why I work so hard to instill the real spirit of living green in my kids. The more we do, the less the planet suffers.
Teaching My Kids About Living Green
We always recycle, and we always pick up garbage up and down the street around our house, but as we do it, I make sure the kids know why we do it. I explain that there’s only so much our planet can take. The pollution hurts the animals, the plants – everything. I explain how interconnected our planet is and how everything affects everything else. I’m happy to say that my kids look at the planet with a respect that I don’t often see in other children – OR adults for that matter.
It’s this commitment to living green that I’m trying to instill in my children that has me so excited about the new initiative from Tom’s of Maine to help students understand the impact that they can and do have on the planet.
Tom’s of Maine and Donorschoose.org
Just in time for back-to-school, Tom’s of Maine and Donorschange.org have partnered up for the Green Your School Fund, an initiative to bring $1 million to classroom across our nation. These funds are used to help teach students about the impact that they have on the planet and how they can help to make it better. Using these funds, teachers can inspire their students to give back to their local communities and to the planet that we all call home. Through this program, Tom’s will match any donation made to environmental education projects submitted to Donorschoose.org, up to $2,000.
In addition to this, Tom’s of Maine and Donorschoose.org have also sponsored the Green Your School Fund Innovation Challenge. This challenge is all about creative ways to help the planet and promote living green. Over 250 creative projects from 40 states were submitted in an effort to secure funding. Of those, a panel of judges selected the ten most creative ideas as finalists.
Now we all have the chance to vote for the project that we feel is the most deserving of funding. Of the ten finalists, the one idea that receives the most votes from the public will receive $25,000 in classroom funding. And what’s more, even though the Innovation Challenge is closed, teachers can still submit ideas for the $2,000 donation matching offer at Donorschoose.org.
Promote Living Green with Tom’s
Living green is a huge part of my life, and I have always instilled that same commitment to the environment in my children. Help Tom’s of Maine teach the value of giving back to the community and the planet by voting for the project you think deserves funding. Join Tom’s, and let’s help encourage children to give back and teach them the importance of living green.
