Teaching kids about true heroes & heroines with books & a Giveaway

Have you ever discussed true heroes or heroines with your kids?

My kids love, love, love, National Geographic Kids books. I mean, who wouldn’t right? They are always so filled with non-stop learning fun while offering fun and amazing pictures. So, when the folks at Mom’s Meet sent The Book of Heroes and The Book of Heroines for the kids, I couldn’t be more excited. the-book-of-heroes

The day the box arrived, Little Man was at soccer, but Baby Miss, who is my avid reader was home. I called my little six-year-old into the kitchen and as soon as she saw the books she got a huge smile on her face. You see, we often talk about heroes and what they mean to us. Truth is that a hero could be so many things to so many people. To Baby Miss, a hero is someone who goes above and beyond to excel at something. May that be a sport, helping children or animals, or someone who risks their lives to save someone else.

The moment she received the books she sat down at the dining room table and began reading The Book of Heroines. I watched as she quietly read to herself for a moment or two before shouting, “look, Mama, Mama Teresa”… or “Look, Mama, Buffy and Zena!” Ha! The joy and excitement on this child’s face was amazing. book-of-heroes-national-geographic

For the next couple of days, I would find her, afterschool reading one page or another of either of the two books. Discussing each person at lengths with her grandmother. Meanwhile, Little Man has become obsessed with The Book of Heros. To him, a hero has always been The Flash, SuperMan, or Spiderman, so it was really nice watching as he learned about true-life heroes, such as Stephen Hawking or Galileo. book-of-heroes-and-heroines

In the end, both kids love their National Geographic Books and I love that they are reading books that are not only teaching them about others but books that have gotten them thinking about the people they want to be.

The Book of Heroes is available for purchase on Amazon and you can also get The Book of Heroines on Amazon, as well!

TO me a hero is someone who truly lives what they believe, and shows love in their everyday life.
